Wimps, Goofballs, and Thugs: Analyzing Girly Men

Wimps, Goofballs, and Thugs: Analyzing Girly Men with Salvo MagazineTools: Print Close Owen Strachan

[Owen Strachan is a regular contributor to Gender Blog, a doctoral student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in historical theology, a newlywed husband, and blogger at Consumed. - David Kotter]

A recent Salvo Magazine piece by S. T. Karnick, "Girly Men: The Media's Attack on Masculinity", lays out three stereotypical masculine images found in contemporary culture. Here's Karnick's distillation of the roles currently available to men in American society:

"(T)he war against boys seems to have created three main character patterns for the adult male of our time: sensitive guys who want to please women; weenies and dorks who want only to be left alone to drink beer and play video games with their dork buddies; and thugs who, in rebellion against their unnatural education, are perpetually concerned with proving their toughness through increasingly loutish behavior. There are, of course, examples of decent, positively masculine males in the culture, but they are becoming increasingly overwhelmed by the products of educational and cultural feminization."

It is interesting to note that each of these unhelpful characters contains an element of goodness, as perversions of the original type often do. The sensitive man, after all, is something of a reaction to the cold, emotionless "Lone Ranger" type of man popularized by actors like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. The sensitive man represents a cultural attempt, then, to correct John Wayne masculinity. Where his father or grandfather never wept, never talked much, never said "I love you", the sensitive male weeps readily, chatters away, and reassures anyone within earshot of his love. In seeking an emotionally alive masculinity the sensitive man seems to have sped past "properly balanced emotional life" and landed in the once-foreign land of "traditionally feminine ways of speaking and feeling". The Christian man stands ready to lend him his roadmap.

However off-base this quest may be, at least the sensitive man seeks to go somewhere. The same can not be said for our goofball. Like other useful items strewn around his room in his parent's home, he could not find a sense of self-control, of shame, if offered a cash reward for it. Where men used to define themselves by taking responsibility, by making money, seeking a wife, fathering children, and so on, various factors changed all this. The rise of collegiate culture unimpeded by institutional Christianity, the booming of anonymous cities that allowed for familial escape, and the rise of the playboy bachelor in the post-World War Two era mixed with the rebellious 1960s to explode responsible masculinity. With that, the man-child was born, and so too a major missiological challenge.

The third group--the thugs--represents a reaction against each of these stereotypes. More accurately, perhaps, this third group is a subgroup of the first. This type of man prizes action, not talk, unlike both the sensitive man and the goofball. This is the kind of man who exalts deeds, not words, who would rather talk with his fists than his mouth. Though all three of these perversions of true manhood have existed throughout human history, this type has caused the most damage, at least physically. Your conquerors, your tyrants, your bullies from high school? They fit here. Driven by pride, motivated by glory and the opinions of others, this group, when unrestrained, possesses the power to cause great harm to others.

If many contemporary men fall into these three rather frightening categories, how are local churches to respond? First, by affirming the element of goodness found in each type. Men of the Bible are by no means silent or unemotional. The father of the prodigal son, for example, weeps openly and deservedly when his son returns home (see Luke 15:11-32). Christ Himself wept when He heard of Lazarus's death (John 11:35). Christ was compassionate, tender, gentle, and merciful throughout the course of His ministry. So we ought to be a balance of strength and gentleness, not either/or. On the other hand, it's a bit difficult to find the goodness in the goofball, frankly. With that said, we can appreciate the way in which this type lives honestly and often happily, enjoying the arts, sports, music, and more. Perhaps this cultural pattern of manhood shows us that men do not need to be grim and dour to be truly masculine. As with sensitivity, we need to work hard to strike a balance here, but we can surely recognize that the Bible affirms a balanced, happy life--see Ecclesiastes for more on that. The Christian man ought to be responsible, but he ought also to be happy.

The thug, for his part, shows us that men were not meant to be wimps. We were meant to be strong, to the best of our capability, and to use that strength for the betterment of others. The patriarchs worked the land, and they worked it hard, in order to provide for their families. Death was a constant threat--to worship in Israel in many ages was to worship with a sword on the belt. Christ Himself stormed through the temple, turning over tables, scourging the wicked. In His second coming, He will arrive as the Warrior-King. Therefore, as men, we should realize that to be a man is to harness one's natural strength, energy, and agency for the betterment of others, namely, one's family, church, and brothers and sisters.

We see, then, that there is a fourth model: the redeemed leader, whose type we derive from the Bible. In a sense, this fourth model is a composite of the earlier three types--or rather, the three types are all realized in Christ, the God-man, whose model is elaborated in the Bible. We must not let our children learn what it is to be a man--or a woman, of course!--from MTV, or Hollywood, or the NBA. No, we must embody robust, godly masculinity in our churches. This starts with a pastor who embodies biblical manhood and who then teaches men to do the same. A full commitment must be made to teaching men the rudiments of biblical masculinity--Proverbs, the Gospels, 2 Timothy come to mind here.

Churches must thus teach men not to be feminine in matters of communication and emotion, not to shirk responsibility and maturity, not to mistreat and abuse others, but to emulate the Savior. When churches train men in this way, fathers will trains their sons, leading to sea changes in Christian culture. The pastor is important, but he trains only one family directly. Every Christian church, however, has many fathers, and it is up to them in an earthly sense to determine whether they will raise men of Christ or men of culture. It is not too much to say that all of the above, all of the preceding discussion, rises or falls with the simple matter of what a father teaches his family, what models he holds up before them, and how he lives out that teaching.

Will our boys be wimps, goofballs, thugs--or will they be a fourth type: Christian leaders according to the dictates of Scripture? The answer depends not on what the culture says, not on what it parades before us on television, but on the conception of man that we teach, that we exalt, and that we embody before the eyes that are always watching, the hearts that are always taking shape and form.

Ready or Not Here I Come You Can't Hide

As the man walks through the streets of R.... Avenue, he thinks to himself " What have I gotten myself into ? " It's late in the evening. The "rif-raf" are the ones that are out in the streets. He's been walking for a little while now. He's passed Blumentritt...Tayuman...R.Papa...Recto...finally Carriedo. He sees the Sta. Cruz church as he looks towards the direction of Jones Bridge. He passes that and ends up all the way to the other side of Chinatown...by Abad Santos and the church by Juan Luna. The life in the street has died. Earlier during daytime it was brimming with life so many people like ants in an anthill...in the evening quiet...almost to the point of menacing. You can never really see what is lurking on one corner. It could be the addicts. It can be a group of drunks. It can be a couple of cops who are out to collect their payoffs, or harrass some bar joint. It can be some rich brat kids who think they own the world. Light another cigs man, no one can touch you. You can't die. You're God's people, an untouchable...maybe.

Ah I just thought I'd post that.

BIG Difference in Comic Books

I have just recently decided to purchase comic books again just to research characters that I want to write. I haven't been into comics for over 15 years. I will say that I was surprised when I purchased it recently.

Back then, comic books were for kids mainly. There was this comic ocde authority with a logo printed in ever cover of any comic book.

Now I was just informed it has been years since the comic code authority has been dismissed by the comic industry. The storylines are no longer for kids. It is young adult and adult oriented. I actually enjoyed reading and the art was fabulous. The paper is very sleek.

The quality has improved 1,000 percent. However, back then the price when I last bought it was about $ 0.75 or $ 1.00 per comic book. Now it is $ 2.99 per comic book and other special formats are at $ 3.99 or even $ 4.95 per comic book. This is pretty expensive for a piece of literature that you can finish reading in 10 to 15 minutes.

Yes I considered comic books literature. The storylines depending on who the writer, are respected by critics. Plus, I believe that comic books when given to a child who does not know how to read will help him or her learn to and continue to read because they are interested in reading them. Why ? The visuals make it interesting for them. Can you imagine a kid wanting to read a book without great illustrations ?

I must say that instead of buying a few comic books for research into the Green Lantern character, I have decided on subscribing to several.

I feel like a kid again. But this is going to be good reading for downtime at the office. After all I am getting tired of reading the newspaper and sports magazines in the office. Something new...for a change.

Write Handed Part 1 (revision)

The morning approaches. As the sunrises, an emerald warrior can be seen flying in the horizon. The speed is so fast he seems like a blur across the sky. In the super hero universe, it is a regular sight to behold. In this region his presence is highly unlikely. What would bring The Green Lantern in Philippines ?

He is not alone.

Coming from the outreaches of space, the Man of Steel cathes up with the Emerald Warrior. " Hal, what do you suppose Dr. Kent Nelson meant by citing ' all your presence is needed here ' meant. "

" I'm not sure. It can't be anything good. It's good to see you again Clark. " The Green Lantern of sector 2814, Earth, responds to Superman. Hal's eyebrows curl as he points on the opposite horizon, " I should have known He would be here as well. "

The Man of Steel sees ahead before Hal could point it out. A jet streaks towards them in the form of a bat. The Dark Knight has arrived. Superman understands there is no love-lost between Green Lantern and The Batman. The Kryptonian says to himself, " Looks like I'll be playing peacekeeper today. " Returning his thoughts as to why they were summoned by Dr. Kent Nelson in the Philippines bothered him. What could possibly be such a big problem in the Philippines that would even concern the archaelogist, Dr. Kent Nelson, otherwise known as the mystical Dr. Fate. There was a concerned look on Superman's face as he pondered why.

Faster Than The Speed of Light ? Perhaps.

Faster Than The Speed of Light? ...Perhaps

I remember a discussion that took place one time in the Sta Cruz, Manila area inside a church back in 1998...I was in discussion with the church's priest, a former "enfocer" member of Iglesia ni Kristo, and an official in the Marcos regime. It was an interesting discussion. Maybe, I'll try to talk about it one day regarding the various chats those three had.

But the thing that sticks to my mind was the priest, who happens to be a lawyer as well, advised that there is something faster than the speed of light. That "thing" is " Gaano kabilis lumipad ang kalulua sa pagkatao." In english this translates to something like, how fast the soul leaves the body of person upon death. Instantaneous! That was faster than the speed of light.

Of course there is no scientific way to measure this phenomenon. First, you have to believe in religion and life after death.

The speed of the soul leaving the physical body upon death. This will require variious posts and will really test the mind. How do you propose starting a theory regarding this matter. Religion and science mixed together. Obsession on this subject will bring a person to the brink of insanity before reaching a valid conclusion that will be presentable or accepted in the general populace.

Perhaps it will take another mind...a mind that thinks in another dimension to help me expand and work on this subject. She is especially helpful because after all she is my unpaid counselor regarding psychological matters. Doc if you are reading this. I could sure use your input on this matter.

One of The Greatest Confrontations of All Time Part 1

One of the Greatest Confrontations of All Time, Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat and his Vendetta for ‘Macho Man’ Part 1

It was about the Autumn season a long time ago, and I happened to be home on a Saturday afternoon and was watching television. Tatang happened to drop by the place and we watched his favorite show…WWF Wrestling. I told him in tagalog, “ Tang, peke po yan. Manood na lang tayo ng baseball.” In which Tatang vehemently defended The WWF, “Lintek kang bata ka. Anong pinagsasabi mong peke. Kung fake yan e bakit nagdudugo ang mga tao.”

There was no need to argue with an old man. I would lose the battle. Being that it was too early to go out and play basketball or anything else, I sat down and watched WWF Wrestling with Tatang that day.

Back then televised matches composed of mismatches of big bulky favorites who would systematically destroy their smaller hapless no-name opponents. Then came the main event for the day. The challenger, from Honolulu, Hawaii…Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat. The guy looked Filipino and I was flabbergasted. I always thought the Steamboat guy was white. Then out came his opponent. Then WWF Intercontinental Champion, led to the ring by his lovely manager, Ms. Elizabeth, from Sarasota, Florida…’The Macho Man’ Randy Savage.

Ms. Elizabeth had to be the best looking female I had seen on television at the time exuding so much class. She had a stunning gown on, and what a body. The beautiful face... a complete foil for “The Macho Man”.

Both men were evenly built. Great conditioning allowed the two grapplers to go at it tooth and nail. What a match! The Dragon matched The Macho Man move for move. Lightning fast elbows to the face. Deep arm-drag takedowns.

Then both combatants took to the air. You thought the U.S. Air Force could fly? The Macho Man would leap from the top turnbuckle drop a double axe-handle on The Dragon's head, almost taking it off. Afterwhich, going for a pinfall cover. ONE! TWO! … and a kick out by The Dragon well beyond the two count, but closer to three!

You could feel the electricity in the air. You could cut it with a knife. Reverse knife-edge karate chops made both of their chest bright red from the repetitive move. Forearm smash!

Scientific moves were countered versus scientific move. The Macho Man went for a body slam, and The Dragon blocked it and rolled him up for a “small package” … and The Macho Man unbelievably kicked out.

Then came the deciding sequence. The referee was knocked down. Won’t you know it, it was Dave Hebner. Macho Man kicked Steamboat outside and raised him above the guard rails and dropped him next first in the metal railings. The Dragon hurt clutching his throat was gasping for air. Macho Man then placed Ricky Steamboat on the guard railing with the neck exposed downward to the metal railing, climbed the top turnbuckle and about 25 feet into the air…LANDED on The Dragon crushing his larynx.

He wasn’t through yet. Macho Man send The Dragon back in the ring and grabbed the time-keeper’s steel bell. He climbed the top turnbuckle again and about eighteen feet in the air DROPPED the steel time keeper’s bell right on The Dragon’s throat. He didn’t just drop it. He friggin drove it into his throat.

The medical crew came in and boy The Dragon was grasping for air. They had to get him out of the ring in a stretcher.

Macho Man ended his opponent’s career, the number one contender. Until March of the following year. That story next time.

C.B. Inspiration

Sometimes I don't know...I just want to know the real meaning of true sadness. Ah but you just get so tired. And after a while I just feel like I'm just watching a dream I just can't wake up from. When I open my eyes it's like I'm seeing the past in one eye, and seeing the present in the other. So maybe I can only see patches of reality.

It's like that story...“There once was a tiger–stripped cat. This cat died a million deaths, was revived, and lived a million lives and was owned by many different people he didn’t really care for. This cat wasn’t afraid to die. Then, one day this cat became a stray cat, which meant it was free and he met a white, female cat and the two of them spent their days together happily. Well, years past and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger stripped cat cried a million times, then he died too, except this time, he didn’t come back to life...”

Yeah. The true meaning of real sadness indeed...

I was younger then, I wasn’t afraid of anything, I didn’t think about dying for a second. I thought I was invincible. Then I met some girl. I wanted to live, I started to think like, for the first time I was afraid of death. I had never felt like that before.

Maybe I really am just watching a dream I can't wake up from.

A Foreigner Loves The Philippines Moreso Than It's Own People

June 12 is a day celebrating the Independence of The Philippines. Can anyone truly say they love the Philippines ? All you hear these days are how bad the situation is in the Philippines and that they cannot wait to leave the Philippines and go to a foreign land where the pasture is greener. The only reason the pasture is greener on the other side, is that they use more MANURE.

But there is one person who unquestionable loves The Philippines, especially during it's darkest hours. And he did not have to...after all he was a foreigner. But I know that this man sincerely loved The Philippines moreso than his land, The United States of America. Below is one of his speeches when he fulfilled a promise to the land he loved.

TO THE PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES:

I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our forces stand again on Philippine soil -- soil consecrated in the blood of our two peoples. We have come, dedicated and committed, to the task of destroying every vestige of enemy control over your daily lives, and of restoring, upon a foundation of indestructible, strength, the liberties of your people.

At my side is your President, Sergio Osmena, worthy successor of that great patriot, Manuel Quezon, with members of his cabinet. The seat of your government is now therefore firmly re- established on Philippine soil.

The hour of your redemption is here. Your patriots have demonstrated an unswerving and resolute devotion to the principles of freedom that challenges the best that is written on the pages of human history. I now call upon your supreme effort that the enemy may know from the temper of an aroused and outraged people within that he has a force there to contend with no less violent than is the force committed from without.

Rally to me. Let the indomitable spirit of Bataan and Corregidor lead on. As the lines of battle roll forward to bring you within the zone of operations, rise and strike. Strike at every favorable opportunity. For your homes and hearths, strike! For future generations of your sons and daughters, strike! In the name of your sacred dead, strike! Let no heart be faint. Let every arm be steeled. The guidance of divine God points the way. Follow in His Name to the Holy Grail of righteous victory!

Douglas MacArthur
